Assange one step closer to extradition to United States

First, lets go back in time to understand exactly what it was that Julian Assange and the Wikileaks team did commencing in the year of 2007.

WikiLeaks and Assange burst onto the international scene with the release of footage from a 2007 airstrike in Baghdad that resulted in the deaths of two Reuters journalists, among others.

The video, which WikiLeaks released under the title “Collateral Murder,” helped feed a growing sense of unease among Americans about the protracted wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and secret practices of the military.

WikiLeaks gained more attention in 2010 after it published scores of confidential U.S. records, which American officials said put lives at risk.

The leak, which saw the release of classified defense documents on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as on detainees at Guantanamo Bay, sparked an international outcry.

The Obama administration did not indict Assange in the immediate aftermath of the leak, but the WikiLeaks founder was later charged with violating the Espionage Act under former President Donald Trump.

LONDON, Dec 10 (Reuters) – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Friday moved a step closer to facing criminal charges in the United States for one of the biggest ever leaks of classified information after Washington won an appeal over his extradition in an English court.

U.S. authorities accuse Australian-born Assange, 50, of 18 counts relating to WikiLeaks’ release of vast troves of confidential U.S. military records and diplomatic cables which they said had put lives in danger.

At the Royal Courts of Justice in London, the United States won an appeal against a ruling by a London District Judge that Assange should not be extradited because he was likely to commit suicide in a U.S. prison.

Further hurdles remain before Assange could be sent to the United States after an odyssey which has taken him from teenage hacker in Melbourne to years holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London and then incarcerated in a maximum-security prison.

Judge Holroyde said the case must now be remitted to Westminster Magistrates’ Court with the direction judges send it to Home Secretary Priti Patel to decide whether or not Assange should be extradited.

Speaking with NBC News in a phone interview from New York City on Friday, Assange’s brother, Gabriel Shipton, said his family feared that Assange would “not survive” extradition.

“We live in fear that … Julian will not survive this,” Shipton, 39, said. “He’s been … crushed and you can really see the toll it’s taken on him over the years.”
